The Play Station SF was an interactive public fitness and play experience that was installed next to a bus stop on downtown San Francisco’s Market Street. The Play Station SF was created by a team of 5 designers and urbanists, and received a grant from San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in partnership with the San Francisco Planning Department. Our design became part of the 2016 Market Street Prototyping Festival and in October 2016, thousands of San Francisco residents, neighbors, commuters, and tourists interacted with our installation.
Play is for everyone, but there’s really nowhere to play on Market Street. Placing free, public workout equipment in a public space is a radical way to invite everyone to work out, play, and feel good – right on a city sidewalk. Community starts with a shared experience. The Play Station invites anyone to look up, get curious, and start playing. How far can you go while you wait for the bus?
